Evidence for rural early childhood development
PCC Research Programme
Progressive Childcare Centre is building a practitioner-led research programme that studies our own practice, improves outcomes for children and contributes credible, context-specific evidence to South Africa's rural ECD knowledge base.
Better outcomes
Curriculum, nutrition and school-readiness decisions informed by observation and measurement.
Credible impact
Evidence that helps funders understand what works, what is learned and how resources improve children's lives.
Knowledge returned
Research designed with practitioners and communities so findings strengthen local services rather than remaining unused.
Five priority research areas
These small-scale, achievable studies connect directly to PCC's programmes and mission so findings translate into improved services.
Research area 1
Executive Function and School Readiness
The evidence gap
South Africa lacks representative norms for executive-function development, despite evidence of strong untapped potential among children in low-income communities.
PCC research opportunity
Partner with a university to document executive-function development in PCC's rural context, strengthen our School Readiness programme and contribute useful local evidence.
Research area 2
Caregiver Beliefs and ECD Outcomes
The evidence gap
Caregiver beliefs shape child-development outcomes, but more evidence is needed on how beliefs influence behaviour and respond to intervention.
PCC research opportunity
Study how parenting workshops, garden participation and other engagement programmes strengthen caregiver practices around early learning.
Research area 3
Nutrition Interventions in Rural ECD
The evidence gap
There is limited practical evidence showing how rural ECD centres can combine garden-based nutrition, subsidies and child-development monitoring sustainably.
PCC research opportunity
Develop the PCC Crèche Garden as a monitored pilot that measures produce, meals supported, nutrition learning and child outcomes.
Research area 4
Programme Quality and Practitioner Development
The evidence gap
Structural inequality and limited investment in teacher development continue to affect ECD and Grade R quality in underserved communities.
PCC research opportunity
Document PCC's practitioner-development journey and measure how CAPS training and SACE professional development influence classroom practice.
Research area 5
Access Barriers for Rural Children
The evidence gap
Distance, transport costs, uniform costs and documentation requirements combine to keep many rural children outside early-learning programmes.
PCC research opportunity
Use participatory action research to document barriers in PCC's catchment area and turn findings into practical outreach and policy recommendations.
Partner in practical rural ECD research
PCC welcomes universities, research institutions, government departments and funders interested in co-creating ethical, proportionate research whose findings benefit children, practitioners and rural ECD centres.
